Snorkeling/Diving
The northern Bahamas are encircled by the third longest
barrier reef in the world. Within this paradise, the
waters around Villa Poincianna are filled with many
miles of spectacular coral mounds, caves, and walls.
All the best areas are in less than 50 feet of water,
some even reaching up to the water's surface, so beginner
divers and snorkelers are easily able to share the
absolute best the underwater world has to offer.
Two
protected Bahamian Underwater Preserves are only 3
miles to the north or south of the Villa, providing
some of the best snorkeling or diving in the world—only a few minutes away.

If
you need to rent or repair diving equipment, or want
to hire a guide for your dives, experienced local
dive shops are easy to find. You might try Dave's
Dive Shop, in Hopetown, on VHF or call in advance
at 242-366-0029. Or try Dive Abaco in Marsh Harbour
at 242-367-2787 to prearrange your diving adventures.
Sailing
Trips
Sail the Abacos aboard the 37' Tayana sailboat "Lokadune"
with Mark Gonsalves at "Cruise Abaco."
Enjoy a day sail with stops at the underwater parks
for snorkeling or a day of island hopping. You will
be picked up at Villa Poincianna for your day of sailing!
For reservations contact Mark at www.cruiseabaco.com.

Fishing
Some of the best fishing in the world is enjoyed in
the Abacos. World-famous tournaments are held in spring
and fall throughout the area. You can catch a wide
variety of big-game fish, and many are great to take
back to Poincianna and eat. Depending on how you do,
you may not have to buy food all week!
You
can catch dinner any time. Season and catch limits
do exist so check with local authorities or visit
Friends of
the Environment for fishing and conservation information.
It's often a good idea to hire a local fishing guide, at
least for your first trip, and many very experienced
guides are available.

And
a special note: Please follow the local rules and
please conserve our local resources–the fish
are truly plentiful, but they may not be forever without
our care. Also, some boat rental companies have restrictions
about taking your rented boat into the open ocean
in some areas, so please inquire with your rental
company and follow their rules–they have lots
of experience and create the rules for your safety.
